Harvest DONE! Farm wife says YEA!!

(Farmer Ken says kind of YEA?)

Harvest is complete and the soybeans and corn are all either at the elevator or in the storage bins. I say YEA!! Farmer Ken lways hates to get done! He always wishes there was another field!
Not time to rest yet though! Have to clean up the equipment, level the corn and soybeans in the bins, put up more electric fence, move the cows, get the garden cleaned up, rake the leaves, put up Christmas lights while it's warm (of course you notice part of this is my list!).
We did have a fun day on Tuesday, when HC came to stay at the farm for the day. He hadn't really had much opportunity to ride in the combine this year. At first he didn't know what to think of the big beast, but after we dumped the load into the auger wagon he really got into it. He sang, made the "vroom" noise and talked about dumping the corn. We had a great time and HC definelty loves to hang around with Grandpa (and grandpa loves to have HC hang around with him!)!

We have AC's and DC's Birthday celebration here Saturday for Brunch,as well as an early Thanksgiving. Will have to get the meuu finalized and get gorceries tomorrow.
Safe travels and Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Soybean Harvest complete

Working on corn

A late night, last night so Farmer Ken could finish filling a bin before starting on another farm. We have had warm and sunny days this week, until this morning when a shower passed through (much better than north and east of us where they had a significant amount of snow). Farmer Ken worked on switching the augers, as the one he was using had the bearing go out; and get ready to start again. I took the opporutnity to go to the city to get groceries, office supplies and a few other errands (I think I stopped at over 12 places in 7 hours including the 45-50 minute drives each way).
Farmer Ken has gone back out tonight, to open up a new field, so we are ready when the sun shines tomorrow.
Wednesday, we were in the big, flat field in the bottom ground or as Farmer Ken calls it the "big bottom". It is the largest and the flatest of any fields he has, in fact there only a few very small fields that are flat on any of the farm!
The deer were running out of the corn as we harvested and elimated their hiding place. Some were frightened and ran, but one kept standing out in the nmiddle of the harvested field looking bewildered and trying to get back into the corn that was left, when I would go to the end of the field.
The sky that day would be sunny with wispy clouds and then get dark and ominous.

The photo below shows he corn feeding into the corn head on the combine, where it is fed through the body of the combine where the shucks ripped off and the kernals removed from the ear, collected and run by an auger into the big holding bin on the back of the combine. The rest of the residue is spread out the back of the combine, onto the field.

Yesterday, the hawks patroled wile I ran the combine, patiently waiting for young rabbits to run from the corn ahad of the combine. They sit in the tops of tress on the edge of the field and swoop ahead of the combine, in the harvested stalks terrrorizing he rabbits, but so nature goes. The hawks have easy picking for their meals on the days we are harvesting.

Harvest & Halloween

It has been a busy week. We attended a Halloween party Friday night as guests of our young farmer friend and his family. We went to Chip Davis' place (Manheim Steamroller fame). It was a great family party and a fun night. The moon and stars were shining brightly through the branches of the trees, when we went on the hayrack ride in the woods to see the "SPOOKY" characters there.
Sunday we were prepraing to get back to harvesting when Farmer Ken found the cows out. DC and Bill came to help and the docile animals were pretty cooperative after filling on fresh grass and soybeans! SO that took care of most of that day. Farmer Ken had decided to harvest the corn on the "bottom road" so he could bring the cows to the farm if he needed to. They ended up going back to the woods, south of here; where they had gotten out of.
AC came out Monday and ran the combine awhile. This was his first time and we were still harvesting to corn. He found it "rather zen", which is true. It is mesmorizing watching the corn stalks feed through the corn head, especially as evening darkness sets in. (TJ asked if I got any "cute photos", but the only photo I took was of the corn emptying into the truck. (Will get some another day!)

The cows got out again and Farmer Ken found out that they were walking across a beaver dam, so now maybe he can control their wanderings!
Tuesday night we had a turtle come to tick or treat. HC looked so cute in his costume!

HC looked so cute in his costume!

We are now back to soybeans, and hope to finish them in the next day or two. Then we can get to the remainder of the corn, which is most of it!
